Compare and contrast.
$ printf '\\[a $]\n' | groff -z -Tps
troff:<standard input>:1: warning: special character 'u0061_0024' not defined
$ printf '\\[a $]\n' | groff -z -Tutf8
$
This appears to have something to do with the "unicode" directive in the
device description file.
