Follow-up Comment #1, bug #57462 (group groff): A new thread about this (http://lists.gnu.org/r/groff/2024-09/msg00025.html) raises some good points, including Branden's observation that at least single underlining can be specified in grout, though currently only the grotty postprocessor implements it.
