Bug #61450 points out that numerous troff requests provoke no diagnostic when
called with additional unrecognized arguments.
Doug McIlroy points out (http://lists.gnu.org/r/groff/2023-06/msg00075.html)
that pic is similarly lenient with unrecognized command modifiers.
Whether this should change is an open question. Comment 3 in #61450 presents
an argument for remaining silent in such situations.
