If I understand it correctly, there's not much to this except changing all
230+ of our test scripts to use different parameter expansion syntax to
populate shell variables like `groff` so that they can be overridden in the
environment, and then writing the `checkinstall` target to set those variables
to the installed locations of the executables being run. (Right now, they all
run out of the build directory.)
