Follow-up Comment #9:

Yup, in my big trawl through fixing up C-style type casts, I goofed here,
permitting integer division to take place inside the argument given to the
`static_cast` operator and discarding precision.

I got fooled because the operator precedences of C++ casting operators and
C-style casts are very far apart.  (The former forces you to use parentheses,
which generally makes thing clearer, but as seen here, a jumbled mind can
defeat this resistance.)
