Follow-up Comment #9, bug #66876 (group groff):

file #57372 shows the state of my branch when I last hit a blocker.

Things worth noting:

1.  I'm planning to just ship the Adobe AFM files.  Font metrics per se aren't
copyrightable (if they were, workalike clone fonts using the same metrics
could not be done without permission), and from what I can see there's no
"original expression" in the AFM files otherwise.  From a practical
perspective, they haven't been touched in 25+ years so their commercial value
cannot be significant.

2.  I'm having problems regenerating SS, just as Deri anticipated.  You can
see my attempt to add a `-r` ("rescale") option to _afmtodit_(1).  The problem
that halted me in my tracks is that the rescaling appeared to be getting
applied _twice_ (0.89*0.89).  I haven't figured this out yet.

Problem #2 could be worked around by just not regenerating the SS font
description files, leaving it hand-maintained until we can solve the rescaling
problem.

I'm open to comments.
