I'm _speaking_ of gropdf's exit status. But my examples show it as filtered
through groff. Sorry for not being clear about that.

Possibly. My system does have a /usr/share/groff/site-font/devpdf/download.
However, gropdf runs without complaint when test-groff invokes it, so a
damaged "download" doesn't seem to explain it. In any case, not really worth
it to me to delve into.
