Follow-up Comment #2, bug #64055 (group groff): I recently did the same in Coreutils. It was much more difficult than I originally thought. Mostly because posix_spawn has no portable way to find out why the child failed, e.g. because the executable does not exist.
I'm guessing that should be less of a problem for groff, hopefully.
