Follow-up Comment #1:

Ugly radical signs are a known pain point with _eqn_.  TeX partisans have been
using them to mock _eqn_ for decades.

I suspect what we want GNU _eqn_ to do is draw the radical sign ourselves with
`\D` escape sequences.

The rule thickness will demand some consideration.
