No apology necessary.  This specific piece warrants separate handling anyway
for the exact reason you filed it.  Bug #66518 is more of a long-term overhaul
kind of ticket.

Also, in the event we need to do a _groff_ 1.24.2, this fix should be
considered for backport, quite possibly along with its successor commit.

    Drop no longer needed check for `struct exception`.  It was used only by
    the now-deleted "src/libs/libgroff/matherr.c".
