Follow-up Comment #2, bug #68326 (group groff):

Thanks for the effort, @rhelmot, and dig deep to offer an improvement.
Happy to confirm that with the changes you propose here the time to first byte
(piped to a pager) is much faster for very large inputs when processed through
grotty.

Not sure if important or relevant: I noticed that when redirecting the output
to `/dev/null` processing the document is significantly slower than when
piping it to a pager, e.g. less.

Also would you mind attaching a (gzipped?) version of configuration.nix.5 to
this issue for folks without access to NixOS to be able to use the same
document you used in your tests?
