Follow-up Comment #3, bug #68345 (group groff):

Hah. The idea in comment #2 works.

"User" does the translation, all is good:

$ printf '.ftr C CR\n.ft C\n' | ./build/test-groff -T ps -z
troff:<standard input>:2: debug: GBR: translated_font_name = CR

User doesn't bother, we warn as we intend, but...

$ printf '.ft C\n' | ./build/test-groff -T ps -z
troff:<standard input>:1: debug: GBR: translated_font_name = C
troff:<standard input>:1: error: cannot open font description file 'C': No
such file or directory
troff:<standard input>:1: warning: font name 'C' is deprecated [-w font]
troff:<standard input>:1: warning: cannot select font 'C' [-w font]

Three diagnostics for one problem? Ingo would burn me to a crisp.
