Yep, I was specifying the kernel parameter incorrectly.  root=hda2
instead of root=/dev/hda2. (slaps head)

OK, thanks.  I'll investigate it more thoroughly (or will when the wife
complains something is broken ;-)

It now installs fine (i.e. setup/embed worked), and find works! :-)
