BTW large linux kernels can not load itself from floppy. It's known problem
so when you said "I think it it a bug in Linux, since your kernel image even
cannot boot itself (using a floppy disk)" you were right - it IS bug in linux.
I do not think it justifies GRUB unability to load such kernel: latest LiLo
works fine for it...
