Thank you for your help - that was exactly what I was looking for. Your
last statement was even more helpful, and in fact, using stage1_5 already
solves the problem for imaging - I was aproaching it the wrong way,
because that's the way I had to do it for LILO, but GRUB is much better,
in that one can use the stage1_5 just after the mbr to find the files from
a partition that moves. Now I don't need to patch anything at all, just
copy the first 16 sectors to the hard disk (of course making sure I don't
overwrite the partition table!), and it works fine on any size of disk.

I guess I should have read the documentation more carefully, although on
re-reading it several times, I still can't find much about the role of the
stage1_5. Perhaps this should be clearer? Or can you point me to where I
can read more about it?
However, it was easy enough to work out once you'd pointed me in the right
direction.
