There is a bug in 0.5.96, that partitions are opened read only in grub
shell. See the mail from Okuji with the subject "a serious bug in
write_to_partition". I think this is your problem.
You can put grub on a floppy, boot it and install from there, or you
can wait for 0.5.96.1 which will fix this bug, or you can get the
latest sources from CVS.
