I've got a system with mandrake-linux 7.2 _in English_ and windows ME. I use
Grub to choose between them and it works perfectly.
I installed mandrake-linux 7.2 _in Dutch_ on a friend's system yesterday. She
also has windows ME, and during the linux install I chose to use Grub as the
bootloader.
When booting, Grub displays its menu and starts counting down the timeout.
This is where the problem is. For each new value of the seconds (%d in the
/boot/grub/messages file), a new line saying "default os is booted in xx
seconds" in dutch is displayed. So in stead of a line in which the seconds
change, you always get a new line.
These new lines mess up the menu which doesn't work any more.
A work-around is to enter the command shell using 'c' and then return to the
menu using 'ESC'. The menu works fine then because there's no countdown.
Another work-around is removed the last line (the one which is used for the
countdown) in the Dutch /boot/grub/messages file. Then the English line is
used to display the countdown which works fine.
