It might be possible, I have not checked the sources, to incorporate parts of 
ISOLINUX/SYSLINUX in the source of grub to make it possible to boot in no emulation 
mode, and, even more useful, to boot from CD. Now grub can only boot from floppy or 
harddisk.

I don't quite understand the 'no emulation mode'. If you refer to one part
of the El Torito specifications, AFAIK the less widely implemented, the
answer is globaly no. This is a possibility but not all --- far from that
--- BIOSes implement this feature.

The second problem is that there is no support at the moment for isofs, so
one will not be able to access files on the CD via GRUB. This is not an
impossibility, this is only because no one has provided patches yet.
