What message do you think is better? "No disk space" or something else? > How many sectors should I leave free in order to always have enough space > for a stage1_5 loader? (That is, what is the maximal size in sectors (or > bytes) of a stage1_5 loader?) We have been trying to keep ffs_stage1_5 less than 7168 bytes (14 sectors) and some others less than 31744 bytes (62 sectors). See the test script "stage2/size_test", for more details. The others (such as reiserfs_stage1_5) don't have any test, but they should have the same or smaller limits.
