Would not it be better to add this feature to the tftp server? It's easier to improve one server than every client. Besides, nobody wants bloat in the bootloader useful just for a few users. Look for "tftp" on freshmeat.net. It seems that tftp-hpa (http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/network/tftp/) can do it already.
