I had on several older machines with Phoenix BIOSes problems
after useing setup (hd0). I got consistently Read Error from
stage1 until I stumbled over the 'd' option for install.

Redoing install by verbosely copying the install command
with the 'd' added salvaged the problem, so I suggest to
add the following small patch to grub.texi.

regards

 @item Read Error
 A disk read error happened while trying to read the stage2 or stage1.5.
+This happens quite often with Phoenix Bioses on older machines after using
+setup (hd0). An easy workaround is to reissue the install command echoed
+by setup, with the 'd' option added (see also @xref{install}).

 @item Geom Error
 The location of the stage2 or stage1.5 is not in the portion of the disk
