Hi, I've done a default installation of the GRUB loader in connection with installing Fedora Core 3. It worked fine.
I then changed the configuration of my machine a bit, removing one HDD, so that the FC3 installation and its /boot/grub directory were no longer on /dev/sdd1, but on /dev/sdc1. Trying to boot yields the four letters: 'GRUB', and then nothing. The machine just locks up at that point. This error doesn't seem to be documented under 'Error Messages'. Realizing that the HDD references in grub.conf would be wrong, I went in and changed the two references to (hd3,0) to (hd2,0). This had no effect on the symptoms of the problem. So, I went into the FC3 installation again, using the Rescue Console function on the distribution disk. I 'chrooted' to /mnt/sysadmin, and proceeded to try running 'grub-install'. I get error messages referring to an unfindable /dev/sdd1, so clearly the grub system is remembering where it was originally set up from. It's not clear to me where to go from here. I hate to go back to LILO, which is clearly inferior, but I can't afford to have my system broken beyond repair every time I swap an HDD in or out. Hope I'm not wasting your time with this, and that you can point me in the right direction.
