The error 18 from GRUB comes from stage1.5 which runs before the boot menu 
appears. Therefore the error is not coming from GRUB, unless either GRUB was 
installed on your Windows partition, or this beahavour is caused by Gentoo's 
modifications to GRUB.

It looks like you have Windows problem, I suggest you ask in a Windows 
newsgroup.

Software RAID shouldn't cause Windows boot failures. The command you want is 
FIXBOOT, not FIXMBR.

But before that I suggest you use CHKDSK to fix any filesystem errors.  If 
GRUB stage1 got installed to an NTFS filesystem it will be corrupted.
