Hiya!

I dualboot Linux and Windows XP on this computer. At least I try to.
The problem is, GRUB refuses to boot up WinXP here. Complains (if I
remember correctly) about illegal devices. Windows XP is on a logical
partition and GRUB can't seem to be able to get at it.

The problem, then, seems to be that GRUB (0.95, Ubuntu) can't read the
Windows partition. Linux itself can. In fact I have it mounted right
now.
1)
Try to use Grub 0.97 (Last version of Grub).
This, however, doesn't seem to be working:

title Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,5)
chainloader +1
makeactive
boot
2)
This should work although I don't know how does Windows work exactly.
Did the Windows XP system on (hd0,5) always be there or was there a system in (hd0,0) before and then you installed Linux?

Could someone point me in the right direction as to what I need to do
in order to boot WinXP
3)
Can you try Super Grub Disk ( http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/ )
Classic Boot --> Boot Partition --> Boot 7th partition

and see what it tells you?

If I were you I will first try to answer 2) then try the 3) and if you cannot make boot the Windows from SGD.

Then 1).
