I would guess that your problem is caused not by grub but by failure of your computer to do what you say you asked it to do, i.e. boot from CD. grub is not diverting control - by the time grub gets control, it's too late. I suppose you could try chainloading the CD's boot loader from grub but I don't know if that would work.

If you also have a floppy disk drive on the machine, you could try making a Generic Linux Boot Floppy - refer to http://www.deesconsulting.com/glbf/README. I did exactly that when I installed FC4 on one machine of mine which can't boot from CD.
