Though I have no solution as of yet, a few things are clear:

1. Further up he writes, he can't install grub on hd0. To be expected, since there is just one Windows partition.

2. tab completion finds only hd0. Obvious, since grub does not bother about the hda,b,c ... rather counts upwards all found hard drives. Since it only finds one, no chance for any hd1.

3. For curiosity, he'd better swap the two drives. To find out which one shows up in the swapped position. This might give a hint about failures.

4. The 'map' is not yet to be discussed. Firstly, the 2 drives need to show in grub (tab completion). This makes the thread much less of a hell: most of the errors in there result from addressing a drive that doesn't exist.
