Your new install probably uses extents (ext4). It's not supported by
grub-legacy and we don't recieve feature requests for it anymore. Use
grub2

This is not a feature request.
I selected ext3 at install on hda6 and gparted shows it to be ext3. At my
boot screen I press "c" for the grub prompt and the find command does not
show results from other partitions hda6 and hda7 that a grub command from a
terminal when I am in ubuntu (hda3). 
Should I trash the grub I am using and replace it with another boot loader?
Maybe grub2?
