There's also a bug report for this kind of problem that GRUB fails after you booted Windows: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/441941 It looks like only OEM versions by HP, Dell and maybe others are affected by this kind of bug. At least I have no problem with GRUB 2 and Windows 7 (or previously with Vista) on the same disk.
