Follow-up Comment #1, bug #32917 (project grub):
It is my understanding that that Xen patch (removing 'placeholder') actively
breaks at least some versions. Did you look at the history to see why that
was added, and follow up the mailing list discussions at the time?
What are "xen syms", and why are they in /etc/grub.d/?
