Try access ESP content. The first version (without APM) sees (cd0,mdsos2) partition but cannot access content. The second one sees three Apple partitions, only the first one has recognizable HFS+ filesystem. As I said already, grub itself does not need ESP, it puts full content on ISO which is accessible as unpartitioned device.
