I'm not opposed to this change, but I generally think that a package
should not try too hard to workaround misinstalled auxiliary packages.

Is there a some situation where one absolutely has to use this hack?

i don't believe installation of tools using different prefixes is really
considered a misinstallation. this situation is actually quite common:
aclocal is supplied by the vendor and has prefix /usr. libtool is
installed later by the admin and has prefix /usr/local. this is what
happened to me and i'm disappointed that you don't see the patch as my
way of preventing this from happening to others.

try to solve the problem another way if you want. ignoring it doesn't
make the problem go away.
