I noticed Shepherd using 100% CPU some time after a system upgrade. After boot/login it takes some time, it seems it eventually starts pegging the CPU.
strace shows a lot of calls to epoll_wait:
epoll_wait(12, [], 16, 0)
ls of /proc/1/fd doesn't tell me much:
12 -> 'anon_inode:[eventpoll]'
lsof shows:
shepherd 1 root 12u a_inode 0,16 0 41
[eventpoll:6,8,9,10,19,22,23,25,26,27,28,29,30,32,33,34,35,36,40,41,68,69,70]
