Because ikiwiki has a VCS backend - means I can write offline on my local clone and push the changes up whenever I finish them. Also it is a good deal faster, because it precompiles pages on edits and then simply serves static pages. And ikiwiki has Markdown syntax, which is simply great! ... these are the advantages I see, by the way. They needn't be the real reasons, because I wasn't the one who decided on the wiki software. Had I known ikiwiki back then and had I had to take the decision, I'd have taken ikiwiki, too. That said: Mediawiki is a very good wiki software, but ikiwiki just feels better suited for a project where the majority of the writers are developers who are used to working on version controlled files, and where pages are read far more often then they are changed.
