If we're talking features for a moment, I'd wish for a compression method in libstore that supports seeking in the compressed stream. I understand that for that one needs some kind of index. Support for this in decompression libraries is surprisingly poor, but liblzma seems to support it. The high-level stuff is missing from liblzma though, even though there is a java implementation in the liblzma source, and someone created a python implementation: http://tukaani.org/xz/xz-javadoc/org/tukaani/xz/SeekableXZInputStream.html http://blastedbio.blogspot.de/2013/04/random-access-to-blocked-xz-format-bxzf.html I believe the grub2 contains a patched xz embedded library that supports that, maybe we could steal that.
