You already are just by asking! Congrats on your first contribution!

A good place to start is to use the Hurd. I consistantly have difficulty
running the Hurd on qemu, so I run it on real hardware:
https://hurd.ion.nu/faq/drivers.html
Incidentally I sell Hurd laptops: https://hurdos.com

Most smart Hurd developers seem to run the Hurd via qemu.

I edit the wiki a lot, answer questions that people post on the mailing list,
answer
questions on irc.

A good thing to do, is to try to do something cool with the Hurd...say by
running a
subhurd: https://hurd.ion.nu/hurd/subhurd.html

If the instructions don't make sense to you, ask for help, and then update the
documentation.
That's how we got this documentation:
https://hurd.ion.nu/hurd/running/flash_qemu_img.html

People had told me that I could flash the Hurd to real hardware and install
that way. Well, I eventually
wrote that wiki page once I understood how to do it.

You could make images for the Hurd wiki like this one:
https://hurd.ion.nu/hurd/translator/eth-multiplexer.html

I actually made that via inkscape whilst running the Hurd on real hardware!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Joshua
