There is nothing daft in this.  It is a useful feature that quite often
simplifies the use of ping from other programs or scripts:

ping 3582074665
PING 3582074665 (213.130.31.41) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 213.130.31.41: icmp_seq=1 ttl=62 time=4.39 ms
