Based on my observations Jonathan Nieder, maintainer for the git package within Debian, was able to conclude that it is a locking bug in the service 'git fetch-pack' [1]. Therefore the problem will persists until Savannah updates to a better issue of Git. The bootstrap code attempts at making a shallow fetch of GNUlib, which causes the problem. Simon recommended a full download of GNUlib, and updating it. That works well for me. There is not much more we are able to do as a subproject at Savannah. Again, the problem lies at the server side of the connection, not in your client, and it only surfaces forreally large repositories. Best regards, Mats [1] http://bugs.debian.org/626212
