With fixes for automake-1.13.1 and autoconf-2.69, I successfully build and run tests for Arch Linux 2012.12.1 with glibc-2.17. This seems resonably recent to me. Gentoo as well as Debian use eglibc, however. It is conceivable, but unlikely, that there could be some difference. Emery stated that his eglibc was available without an integrated gets().
