glibc 2.16 and ping

Hello,

I'm trying to compile inetutils 1.9.4 on an old linux system, running
glibc 2.16.

ping binary compiles fine, but seems like it's unable to ping the
hostnames or ip addresses:

$ ./ping --version
ping (GNU inetutils) 1.9.4

$ ./ping 192.168.1.1
./ping: unknown host

Same binary on a recent glibc like 2.31 works fine.

I'm attaching the bad strace log.
