At the moment we're gearing up for a 1.6 release, so we won't deal
with this on the short term.  (unless you submit a ptach, of course
:-)

The the positioning is done by (IIRC) the
Lyric_phrasing_engraver. It's quite a hairy piece code, and does
things that should happen in the backend. I think that the code should
be rewritten (with apologies to Glen for insulting his code).  You
could switch it off by removing Lyric_phrasing_engraver (lives at
Score context).
