Well, I think that the main problem is the documentation. It doesn't have the best examples. (For example I had no idea that lyricsto can be mixed with other lyricsto-s and with explicit lyrics length if you don't write \lyricsto "something" \new Lyrics, but \new Lyrics \lyricsto "something" This little change in the documentation would have helped me much.
