The files are not needed anymore. However the manual hasn't been updated to show the new way of using lilypond-book. See http://www.mail-archive.com/lilypond-devel@gnu.org/msg06633.html and other emails on that thread for more information.

I ask because I want to use lilypond-book; but there are lots of problems, discussed on this list before (dvips + mapping files). As for now it simply doesn't work. (also making docs during installation failed)
