I don't, and I hope you know that. Clearly, there are two different bugs here: the \stemDown that doesn't work, and the collision. I just assumed the former to be related to the latter, which is why I didn't want to remove this "extra material" -- but you're obviously right. I'll just add it as a comment to the issue.
