Such error messages sometimes appear if you have a file with special
characters (non-ASCII) if you haven't managed to save the file in UTF8
encoding
(which is the only thing LilyPond understands).
However, if it happens with all .ly files, then it rather looks like a
problem with
your installation. I don't remember if I have seen exactly this problem on
OSX and LilyPond 2.10.x, but you may want to search the mailing list
archives.
Regarding your question about line numbers, I don't really get what you
mean. For most syntax errors, LilyPond is good at specifying exactly
which line is the problem. For bug fixing, I hope you have read about
Point-and-click in the LilyPond manual.

Hello,
LilyPond is excellent and I enjoy using it, but noticed something in
the console that might be of interest to you.
Specifically - programming error: FT_Get_Glyph_Name returns error - etc.
Also, it would help me somewhat if editor gave line numbers to the
lines of music code.
I write a bar to a line, and in a large piece of music this would be helpful
when I'm bugfixing.
Yours sincerely
