I've already mentioned in #3 that the space under the beam should be increased if necessary, so your example is not the right `answer'. I agree with you that 2/5 is
too big. So we have actually two bugs. (a) The maximum beamlet length should be reduced. (b) Never shorten a beamlet. Instead, there should be a mechanism to enforce a minumum distance between the beamlet and the note it points to, avoiding the situation shown in your example.
