I think setting stencil false will cause errors in other grobs, not just those that use self-alignment-interface. For example, NoteHeads. That's why I used the rather vague generic description, "errors will be generated" in the LM, rather than give more precise details.
There is no solution that will do the right thing in every case. Again, that's why the LM mentions several possible ways of changing the visibility of a grob.
