To me the root question for Joe's original 1120 fix is probably something like
"Do we want to have the same default extra-spacing-height for all Items, or do we want to adjust the extra-spacing-height by type of Grob?"
I'm afraid I don't have a good answer to that question, but I don't know of anybody who's done more careful investigation of spacing than Keith, so I lean towards accepting his recommendations.
