It is very tempting to backport dbe720d because
the patch is a safe bit of defensive programming,
the issue would have been critical except for the workaround (avoid the
sans font) and
the only practical test of the fix is to include it in a build for the
Windows7 platform.
I'll boldly label backport, to let the backporter decide.
