Additional re: the x86 - 2.15.15-1 version, fresh download, (from LilyPond.org site) on OS 10.5.8.
I found that a source file compiled correctly when using command-line (lilypond source.ly) in Terminal.app. I was also able to use convert-ly. Attempting to open LilyPond.app from Finder results in the previously described error message.
Sorry, but the above reference to "no lilypond included" is confusing. More detailed instructions would help.
