You're right, I was too hasty and jumped to the wrong conclusion (I actually 
wrote the refs you gave!).  The only difference between PianoStaff and 
GrandStaff is that the staves of PianoStaff are only removed together.  So I've 
no idea now why GrandStaff was used in this example.  Its origin was earlier 
than 2008 and predates its appearance in git, so no clues there.  Whatever; 
clearly it should be PianoStaff now - lyrics do not, in fact, collide with the 
span bars.
